My late Mother once said to me find a job you love doing
and you will never work a day in your life again. Words I will never forget...............
Now where did it all begin, well I was so lucky to have a
Dad that was sport mad and I had a lot to do to fill his boots as he was good
at every sport he played.
I first noticed that I was different when I realised when
watching sport no matter what it was I was curious to know why it worked when
it worked and how I could do it.
I remember watching a guy called Hipditch who was world champion
at clay pigeon shooting he was English. I studied his technique analysed it and
implemented it and I became a very accomplished shootist and shot at county level.
I also implemented this technique with rugby and all the other sports I played
back in Ireland throughout my sporting amateur days.
Then along came golf in a way I tripped over it after
suffering a career ending injury while playing rugby. A friend trying to be
nice to me after my injury asked me on golf outing he gave me a handicap of 18
and took me to Lahinch a championship course in the West of Ireland not to
mention it was blowing a gale force 8 and it was a links course. I played my round
and not knowing the scoring system he tallied my score and I had 36 points Stableford.
There were raised eyebrows.
This was the start I was hooked and I had to know why,
when and how.
My journey had begun I played and played and studied all
the greats but the one I came to love was Big Jack the Golden Bear . My
obsession and enthusiasm was uncontrollable to the extent it took its toll on
my work and marriage. I practiced every chance I could and played as often.
What I did as an Amateur is not relevant but I did win
all there was to be won bar a few titles at the two clubs I was a member.
I am not making light of my victories but to the people I
have taught and to the people that I will teach in the future they want to know
what I can do for them not what I have done in the past it is what I can do for
them is more important.
My passion was so great I gave up a job most people would
die for to become a golf coach or teacher I believe I am a bit of both. This
was because of the encouragement of my Wife.
She took up golf at the same time as my Daughter and we
went to the driving range twice a week.
During these visits to the range I started to attract a
fan base and for a finish I could not get time to teach my Wife and Daughter.
All these people started to improve and could see the
advantage of having tuition so my wife Bernie asked me the question! WHY DONT
YOU BECOME GOLF COACH.
On top of this My Daughter Danielle who was very young at
the time told me TO FOLLOW MY DREAM.
I went to England from Ireland to train as a Golf Professional.
This trip I made several times afterwards to train in club making and fitting, golf
physiology and many other subjects relating to golf. Unfortunately the
recession hit hard back 2007 and the very successful business I had established
which included a state of the art indoor studio, a consultancy business, and
residency at 1 driving range and 3 courses came to an end and we lost
everything.
After several applications and 1 interview I came to Chingford
to work at the Fairways Golf Range for Scott Cranfield. After 10 months this
came to an end as Scott moved on and so my adopted Brother Jon Jones and I took
over at Fairways.
Since then The Lama Golf Institute was born and I have coached
hundreds of people with great success. I look back and think of the words of my
Mum and I realise why I do so well and why people improve and get better with
my help, its because I love what I do and I strive every day to know more and
more so I can become as good as I can in every way as a coach, as a Dad, as a
husband and most of all as a human being.
To my Dad and my Mum I thank you for the skills and the
wisdom and to my Wife and Daughters thank you For the support and encouragement
and a special thank you to my adopted Brothers Jon and Nigel two great guys and
also two great coaches .
One mention I have to give is to another brother Dom who
helped us as a family to make this possible to come through ...... Thanks Dom
De Dom.
I open my arms and my heart to all that come to our range
but most of all I open my mind.
