Sean joined the Lama Golf Institute in May 2013 and continues to grow his
career under the LGi banner!
My golfing journey began at the sprightly young age of 9
when I lived in Zambia, Africa. I immersed myself in the game for hours on end
and before turning 14 I had won the Zambian national junior golf championships
back to back. Not long afterwards, I returned to Northern Ireland with my family
where I was fortunate enough to develop my game on some of the famous and
brutal links courses of the north Antrim coast.
Before I got into golf coaching I worked as a copywriter at
Saatchi & Saatchi in London.
However, after a few years living and working in the hustle and bustle of a
huge city, I wanted a change and decided to follow my heart and get back into
golf.I began my golf coaching career at the age of 30 with the
burning curiosity as to why the average handicap has not decreased in over 100
years. In search for some answers my studies have led me into NLP (Neuro
Linguistic Programming), Hypnosis and Personal Development.
I believe that a great coach, in whatever discipline, should
be a passionate learner and reader. Sometimes looking in random places to
discover how to improve their own game first and then, as a coach, to be able
to help the game of their clients. Modern coaching is based on looking
backwards at what has happened historically and is limited by what we currently
know. Today’s coach has to look forward to what is possible and break new
ground. The golf swing cannot be coached out of a book or based on
standard information on what others do. We are unique individuals and each
golfer brings to each coaching session a set of unique experiences which have
to be considered during the learning process. I have come to believe and understand that there is no one
way to swing a golf club and that, together, we have to tap into your
uniqueness to help you discover your perfect swing. Learning golf should be
like learning any other skill - by being creative, making mistakes,
experimenting, taking risks, breaking rules and having fun.
Learning is the creation of a relationship between the known
and the unknown. As the great Sir Henry Cotton once said, “Good golf is played
between extremes! You’ve got to know the extremes, and the angles, of your
swing and what they give you. Then you must find the balance between them, and
be able to hold it.” My on-going focus as a golf coach and lifelong learner is to
constantly strive to ensure the message I give to my students is simple and
achieves better results quickly. Change and learning are definitely possible at
all ages and abilities.
I open my arms and my heart to all that come to Belvedere Driving Range
and most of all I open my mind. I look forward to welcoming you to the Lama
Golf Institute.
If you see me about in the shop or on the range and have any
questions about your golf please don’t hesitate to give me a shout.
